Schaffer’s Homer Walks It Off For Bonac Softball
The East Hampton softball team (1-5 overall) won its first game of the season in dramatic fashion on Friday at home. After Lydia Rowan’s triple in the bottom of the seventh scored the tying run, Alexa Schaffer won it with a three-run home run that capped the 13-10 come-from-behind victory for the Bonackers. Schaffer went 2 for 4 with three runs scored and four RBIs. Colleen McKee went 4 for 5 with a run scored and Isabel Briand went 2 for 4 and struck out four in the circle.
Bonac Girls Track Earns First Win
The East Hampton/Pierson/Bridgehampton girls track team (1-2) won its first League V dual meet of the season in dominating fashion, topping host Eastport-South Manor, 115-20, on April 9. The Bonackers swept seven different events, taking the top three placements in the 1,500-meter race (Greylynn Guyer, 5:28.4; Laura Martinez, 5:28.8; and Josie Mott, 5:29.3), the 100-meter dash (Leah McCarron, 12.9 seconds, Vicky Chen, season’s best 13.8 seconds; and C.J. Echavarria, 13.9 seconds), the 1,500-meter race walk (Bennett Greene, 8:51.6; Bea Flight, 11:23; and Angie Castillo, season’s best 11:51.8), the 3,000-meter race (Mott, 14:42.2; Guyer, 14:42.5; and Martinez, 14:42.9), the long jump (Alex Kolhoff, 14 feet 11 ½ inches; Sierra Stumpf, 14 feet 1 ½ inches; and Chen, season’s best 13 feet 5 ½ inches), and the high jump (Stumpf, 4 feet 6 inches; Sabina Piecyk, personal best 4 feet 4 inches; and Lilly Wood Savarese, personal best 4 feet 4 inches). Though it wasn’t actually competed, East Hampton was also given all nine points in the pole vault since it was ready to compete and ESM wasn’t. Lucia Mogavero won the triple jump with a leap of 31 feet 1 ½ inches. Echavarria also won the 100-meter high hurdles in 17.3 seconds.
Southampton Baseball Takes Two From Mattituck
After defeating host Mattituck, 12-1, on April 8, the Mariners (3-5 overall) turned around the very next day at home and defeated the Tuckers once again, this time by a count of 4-3. Lucas Magnozzi paced the Southampton offense in the 12-1 victory going 3 for 4 that included a double and a triple with two runs scored and four RBIs. Will Dupree drove in a pair of runs and also scored twice, and it was all more than enough for starting pitcher Daniel McDonnell who allowed one run on two hits while striking out five. Bailey Brown pitched the final two innings and struck out two. The Mariners scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh of the second game on April 9. Cooper Helmsteadt tied the game with a base hit to center field that scored Travis Kreymborg. Then Thomas Crawford, who had singled to lead off the inning, later scored the game-winning run on an error.
Westhampton Beach Boys Lacrosse Has Won Three Straight
Dating back to a 16-3 victory over St. John the Baptist on April 7, the Hurricanes (2-2 in Division II, 4-2 overall, 115 power points) have won three straight after defeating host Center Moriches, 14-8, on April 9 and then Mattituck/Southold/Greenport, 10-3, on Friday. Finn Drake has paced the offense with four points (two goals, two assists) in the win over Center Moriches and six points (three goals, three assists) in the win over MSG. Charlie Beasley made 11 saves in each of the two latest wins. Riley Maire and Drew Calloway each scored hat tricks in the win over the Red Devils.
Herrera, Maloney Pace Hurricane Softball
The Westhampton Beach softball team (3-4 overall) rebounded from its tough loss at East Hampton on Friday with a 4-2 nonleague victory over Riverhead at home on Monday. Mackenzie Herrera struck out four and allowed two runs on seven hits in a complete game. Reilly Maloney went 2 for 3 and drove in Katie Burke and Rylee McGinness on a two-out single to open the scoring in the bottom of the first. Burke drove in Michaela Hertwig in the second inning and McGinness followed with a sacrifice fly to plate Luciana Reilly.
