Whalers Field Hockey To Vie for 11th Consecutive Title
The Pierson/Bridgehampton field hockey team has qualified for the Suffolk County Class C Championship, which will be played at Rocky Point High School on Tuesday, November 4, at 6 p.m., or shortly following the preceding Class B Championship. The Whalers, who earned the berth into the championship after going 6-10 in a mixed-classification Division II, will play top-seeded Bayport-Blue Point, which finished the season tied with Class B Eastport-South Manor atop the division with identical 14-1 records. Pierson and Bayport played each other once this season, in Bayport, on September 25. The Phantoms won, 2-0. The Whalers have won the past 10 consecutive Class C county titles.
Southampton Girls Volleyball Set To Host Semifinal
After finishing the season with a 5-3 League VII record, the Mariners were seeded second in the Suffolk County Class B playoffs and will host No. 3 Mattituck (5-3 in League VII, 9-5 overall) this Thursday, October 30, at 5:30 p.m. The winner of that match will advance to the county championship against top-seeded Bayport-Blue Point (7-1 in League VII, 12-2 overall) on Friday, November 7, at Newfield High School at 6:30 p.m., or directly following the Class A final. Southampton, which reached the county final last season, when it lost to Center Moriches, split its matches with Mattituck this season. After defeating the Tuckers in their own gym, 3-1, on September 12, the Tuckers reciprocated and handed the Mariners a loss in their own building, also 3-1, on October 15.
Single Helps Lead Baymen to Second Consecutive Victory
Michael Single rushed for 210 yards on 25 carries and two touchdowns, leading the host Hampton Bays football team to a 26-6 victory over Center Moriches on Friday night. Connor Bullinger completed 6 of 7 passes for 93 yards and a touchdown that went to Owen Haynes, a 15-yard strike. Bullinger also carried the ball four times for 25 yards and another touchdown. Brayden Talmage caught three passes for 56 yards in what was the Baymen’s second consecutive victory of the season, improving them to 2-5 in Division IV. Hampton Bays has two games remaining on its nine-game schedule, at Mount Sinai this Thursday, October 30, and at Babylon on November 7. After revamping the schedule due to Southampton and Greenport/Southold/Mattituck dropping their varsity programs, Section XI decided that four Division IV teams would qualify for the postseason rather than the typical eight. With five teams in the division set to finish with winning records, the Baymen will not qualify.
Win and in for Westhampton Beach Football?
The Hurricanes took a hit, maybe albeit slightly, when they suffered a rare home finale loss, 31-21, to Hauppauge on Friday night. According to head coach Bryan Schaumloffel, since his team was seeded second going into this season, a win at Islip this Saturday, November 1, at 2 p.m. would almost assuredly lock up either the seventh or eighth seed in the Division III playoffs. A loss doesn’t necessarily preclude his team either, Schaumloffel said. Nic Simone ran for two touchdowns in the loss to Hauppauge and Nate LoGelfo returned a kickoff 95 yards for another score. With the win, Hauppauge snapped a 10-game losing streak to the ’Canes, who fell to 2-5.
