Despite Early Troubles Bonac Swimmers Win Another Meet
The East Hampton/Pierson/Bridgehampton girls swim team defeated Northport/Commack, 99-69, in their final nonleague meet of the season at the East Hampton YMCA RECenter on Thursday, September 25, but not with some trials and tribulations to start. Head coach Craig Brierley said “the girls got themselves so amped up,” to swim against Northport that not one team but two teams were disqualified in the opening event, the 200-yard medley relay, due to “mental breakdowns.” Still, the Bonackers “chipped away at Northport’s early 12-2 lead,” and by the third event, the 200-yard individual medley, they had led, 24-22, and never looked back. East Hampton won 10 of the 11 events on the night. Pierson sophomore, Vanessa Rizzo, was selected by team captains as the Swimmer of the Meet. Not only is Rizzo one of the team’s top scorers each meet, the captains said she selflessly competes in any event in which she is needed so they wanted to call her out for her intense work ethic at practice and her ability to flash the biggest smile no matter what the outcome in her meet events.
