Bonac Baseball Misses Playoffs
Needing to sweep playoff-bound East Islip to finish with a record over .500 in order to qualify for the Suffolk County Class AA playoffs, the East Hampton baseball team (7-11 in League V, 8-12 overall) lost the first game of a three-game series, 5-1, at home on May 7. It then lost the second game, 7-0, at East Islip, on Thursday, May 9, then lost the finale, 6-5, back at home on Friday. The Bonackers trailed that final game, 4-0, after the first inning, and 6-1, after four innings, but scored four in the bottom of the sixth to make it a one-run game. Nico Horan-Puglia led the inning off with a triple to center field and Carter Dickinson brought him in with a line drive base hit to center field. Livs Kuplins drove in Dickinson with a base hit to right field, then Hudson Meyer singled to center, driving in Kuplins. Both Dickinson and Trevor Meehan singled to get the tying and go-ahead runs on base in the bottom of the seventh but were stranded.
Bees Baseball Wins Final Series
The Bridgehampton/Ross baseball team swept Amityville in a doubleheader on May 8 to take three of four from the Warriors and even up its League VIII record to 6-6 (8-7 MNL, 8-8 overall). The Killer Bees took the first game of the day, 7-5. Kai Alversa pitched a complete game in which he gave up no earned runs and struck out 10. He also went 2-for-4 at the plate with three RBIs. Milo Tompkins went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. The Bees scored eight runs in the first two innings of the nightcap that they went on to win, 9-1. Tompkins, Shawn Gnyp and Ari Kardaras each drove in two runs and Tate Foard pitched the six-inning complete game, allowing one unearned run while striking out seven. The doubleheader was played at the brand new Middle Country Athletic Complex in Selden where Bridgehampton/Ross will play its first playoff game, the Regional Final, on June 1.
Southampton/Pierson Girls Golf Officially Goes Undefeated
The Mariners defeated host Longwood, 7-2, at Spring Lake Golf Club in Middle Island on May 7 to finish the regular season a perfect 12-0. Individual scores were not available. The League IV champions are preparing for the Section XI Championships which are this Monday and Tuesday, May 20 and 21, at Middle Island Country Club.
Southampton Baseball Takes Series From Mattituck
The Mariners finished their season strong, outscoring Mattituck, 27-5, in the final two games of the regular season to win the three-game series. Head coach Zach Epley said it’s most likely the first time in 10 years or so that Southampton had beaten Mattituck in a series. Declan Barbour and Liam Blackmore went a combined 11-for-17 with seven RBIs in the two victories. Blackmore went 5-for-5 in the Mariners’ 17-4 victory at Mattituck on Thursday, May 9, after having gone 3-for-4 the day prior, which was a 10-1 home victory. The team also had solid pitching from Elijah Abella, Bailey Brown and Daniel McDonnell. Both Abella and Blackmore returned from injuries in the final series.
Trio of Mariners Reach Division IV Tournament
Southampton senior Jax Gassner earned a spot in the singles bracket of the Division IV Boys Tennis Tournament that began on Saturday at William Floyd High School and finished on Tuesday. Senior Beckham LaRose and junior Sam Conklin took part in the doubles tournament. Results were not available by press time. Check 27East.com and next week’s edition for updates.
Schultheis Leads Baymen Girls Lacrosse
Emma Schultheis scored five goals to lead the Hampton Bays girls lacrosse team (2-14 overall) to an 18-7 victory over visiting Southampton (1-15 overall) on Thursday, May 9. Fiona Haddock, Taylor Meyers and Kirra Schoerlin each scored three goals, while Eden Brown and Allison Booth both potted a pair of goals. Jaylin Maloney and Marin Schwartz each scored twice for Southampton.
Allen Leads Hurricane Baseball Over ESM
Jude Allen went 3-for-4 with a double, two runs and an RBI and he struck out in five innings pitched for the Westhampton Beach baseball team’s 5-4 victory at Eastport-South Manor on May 8. Ethan Seltzer went 1-for-3 with two RBIs and Patrick Fay pitched the final two innings to earn the save for the ’Canes (3-15 in League V, 5-15 overall).
