East Hampton Boys Golf Hand ’Canes Their First Loss
Charlie McMillan shot a match-low 33 to help lead the Bonackers to a 7.5-1.5 victory over previously unbeaten Westhampton Beach at the Amagansett Golf Club on Monday. East Hampton outshot the Hurricanes, 199-208. Zach Berger shot a team-low 38 for the ’Canes. Though both teams still had to finish out the rest of their regular season schedules this week, if they win out, East Hampton and Westhampton Beach will share the League VIII title this season.
Bonac Swimmers Lose Tight Meet to Ward Melville
Down two points going into the final event, the 400-yard freestyle relay, Ward Melville held off a surging East Hampton/Pierson/Bridgehampton girls swim team by taking first and third place to win the overall meet, 89-81. The Bonackers jumped out to a quick lead when they took first and third in the opening event, the 200-yard medley relay, and they were able to maintain the lead through six events before the Patriots tied up the match in the 100-yard butterfly. They took the lead in the 500-yard freestyle and led by as many as eight points heading into the 100-yard backstroke, but Vanessa Rizzo won the 100 back and Lizzy Daniels won the 100-yard breaststroke to pull Bonac within two points going into the 400 free relay. Springs School eighth-grader Avienne O’Shea was named Swimmer of the Meet by team captains due to proving how tough of a competitor she is in her first varsity season. The captains were impressed with her fearlessness in her races and how she welcomes any challenge in order to help the team.
Casey’s Game-Winner Lands First Win for Whalers Field Hockey
Shelby Casey, off an assist from Ashley Stuckart, scored to give Pierson/Bridgehampton (1-7 in Division II) a 2-1 lead in the third quarter and eventual victory — its first of the season — over East Hampton (4-6 in Division II) at Mashashimuet Park on September 29. Jia Russo, off an assist from Abby Perello put the Whalers on the board in the first quarter. Brynley Lys, off an assist from Sabrina Texis, scored with one second left in the game that brought East Hampton within one goal. Caroline Gregor made three saves for Pierson while Izzy Briand made four saves for Bonac.
Pierson Boys Soccer Wins First Game
Kai Green scored two goals to lead the Whalers (1-6 in League IV) to a 4-2 home victory over Smithtown Christian on September 30. Sebastian Corson and Rys Dawson each added a goal.
Southampton Field Hockey Snaps Losing Skid
A 2-0 victory on the North Fork over Greenport/Southold/Mattituck on Friday ended a seven-game losing streak for the Mariners (2-7 in Division II). Malu Garcia and Carlie Kreymborg each scored off penalty corners and Neavhya Bell made two saves in goal for Southampton.
Alvarez’s Pair of Goals Lead Mariner Boys Soccer
The Southampton boys soccer team (5-3-1 in League IV, 5-4-1 overall) handed host Babylon its first League IV loss of the season thanks to Gonzalo Alvarez’s two goals, one in the first half, another in the second, which led to a 2-0 victory on September 30. Ewen LeGwen made five saves in goal for the shut out.
Southampton Girls Volleyball Bounces Back After Loss
The Mariners (3-2 in League VII, 7-2 overall) have yet to lose back-to-back matches this season. After losing, 3-1, at home to Bayport-Blue Point on September 30, Southampton responded with a 3-0 victory over Greenport/Southold at Greenport High School on Friday in straight sets, 25-17, 25-13, 25-16. Lucia Obregon had 23 assists, Haven Daley had 11 assists and eight digs and Bailey Brown finished with 19 kills and 15 digs.
Hurricane Boys Volleyball Defeats Hills
The Westhampton Beach boys volleyball team (7-1 overall) defeated Half Hollow Hills, 3-0, at home on September 30 in set scores of 25-13, 25-20, 25-17.
Westhampton Beach Girls Volleyball Pulls Out Win Over Harborfields
Emma O’Came had 12 digs, 20 assists and an ace to lead the Hurricanes (6-2 in League V) to a 3-2 win at Harborfields on September 29. Jasmine Taylor had 12 kills and two blocks, while Katie Burke had 18 kills, 14 digs and six aces. Jackie Brody helped with six aces, Mia Hill had seven kills and Ellie Mett added five kills.
