This year’s East End Track Classic at East Hampton High School on Saturday may have been the biggest ever.

The event, originally put together by girls track head coach Yani Cuesta a few years back, brought in what was originally registered to be well over 800 athletes from schools that hailed from both Nassau and Suffolk counties, both public and private, with all South Fork schools in attendance. The fact that it wasn’t raining was a huge plus as most invitationals this spring have been competed under rain.

Since it was timed correctly by Elite Feats, it was also one of the last meets where athletes could register their best times and marks to try to get into the upcoming county championship meets. Many athletes from the South Fork either won events or had some of their best performances of the season.

Starting with the host Bonackers, C.J. Echavarria won the open 100-meter high hurdles in 17.12 seconds; Greylynn Guyer won the open 1,500-meter race in a personal best 4:57.64; Laura Martinez won the freshman/sophomore 1,500-meter race in 5:12.06, with Josie Mott placing second in 5:30.13.; Sara O’Brien won the open 400-meter intermediate hurdles in a season’s best 67.71 seconds; Maggie Greenwald finished second in the freshman/sophomore version of the season in 71.73 seconds; Chelsea Fromm won the freshman/sophomore 1,500-meter race walk in a personal best 9:35.10; Alex Kolhoff, Vanessa Rizzo, Mott and Guyer won the 4x400-meter relay in 4:23.47; Kolhoff won the open high jump in a personal best 5 feet 2 inches; Alessa Picco placed second in the freshman/sophomore version at 4 feet 6 inches; Lucia Mogavero placed third in the freshman/sophomore triple jump with a leap of 32 feet 1 inch; Sydney Powers placed second in the freshman/sophomore long jump with a leap of 15 feet 4 ½ inches; K.K. Moore placed second in the open shot put with a season’s best throw of 33 feet, teammate Leah McCarron finished third with a 32-foot-1-inch throw; Moore also placed third in the discuss with a throw of 88 feet 3 inches and McCarron placed fourth (85 feet 2 ½ inches); and Vicky Chen placed second in the open pole vault with a season’s best 8 feet 6 inches.

The East Hampton girls also won their final League V dual meet of the season, 81-53, at home over Half Hollow Hills West on May 13 to finish third with a 4-2 record.

As for the Bonac boys, their top performers included Benson Edman, who finished the 1,600-meter race in 4:57.81; Edmar Gonzalez-Nateras, who placed third in the 800-meter race in 1:59.38; Abe Stillman, who placed second in the pole vault in a personal best 12 feet; Sean Perez and Max Bellenou, who finished the 1,600-meter race in 4:52.91 and 4:53.69; Liam Knight, who finished the 400-meter dash in 52.1 seconds; Xavier Johnson, who placed second in the freshman/sophomore 400-meter dash in 51.88 seconds; and Nelvin Suchute, who won the freshman/sophomore long jump with a leap o 18 feet 8 ½ inches.

“Coach [Davin] Johnson and I want to thank all of our athletes and parents for such an incredible day of hard work,” boys track head coach Sean Knight told his athletes. “We raised a lot of money to help buy some new equipment to support our team for next year. Thanks to the crew for quickly setting up a new high jump mat to get that meet finished on time. We appreciate all your efforts. Especially to all those who stayed and helped break down at the end so our Junior could get to the prom.”

Some other notable performances from South Fork athletes included Ezekiel McCrary of Westhampton Beach placing second in the pentathlon. He finished with 2,464 points, just three points behind East Islip’s James Terhune. MikaiLing Pantophlet of Westhampton Beach placed second in the girls open long jump with a 16-foot-6-inch leap. Asha Pensa-Johnson of Hampton Bays won the girls open discus with a throw of 118 feet 6 ½ inches. She also won the shot put with a throw of 35 feet 2 inches. Southampton’s Davon Palmore won the open 100-meter dash in 11.07 seconds, with teammate Hudson Fox finishing third in 11.28 seconds. Palmore also placed second in the open 200-meter dash in 21.87 seconds. Daelyn Palmore of Southampton placed third in the open 100-meter dash in 13.10 seconds. Her teammate Zoey Sulph placed second in the freshman/sophomore 100-meter dash in 13.89 seconds. Lili Telvi, also of Southampton, placed third in the open 800-meter run in 2:42.96. Magnus Haynia of Westhampton Beach placed third in the freshman/sophomore 800-meter race in 2:10.87. Jasmine Garcia also of Westhampton Beach placed second in the freshman/sophomore 800-meter race in 2:35.34. Eleanor Ramsay of Hampton Bays finished second in the freshman/sophomore 200-meter dash in 27.72 seconds.

The Section XI 4B County Championships, which Hampton Bays and Southampton will compete in, will be May 29 at Mount Sinai High School. The Section XI 3A County Championships, which East Hampton and Westhampton Beach will compete in, will be May 30 at Kings Park High School. All meets are expected to begin at 2:30 p.m. Those who are competing in the pentathlon will do so on May 24. The boys will be at Northport High School at 8:30 a.m., while the girls will be at Ward Melville High School at 9 a.m.
