A dolphin that was stranded in Noyac Creek near Jessup’s Neck and Clam Island in Noyac this weekend has died. Its carcass was removed Tuesday morning by the Atlantic Marine Conservation Society, which will conduct a necropsy to try to determine the cause of death.
The dolphin was sighted on Friday by Randy Hagerman, a resident of Cedar Point Lane, who reported seeing it swimming in slow circles in the creek.
On Monday morning, the dolphin appeared to be stranded in shallow water on the south side of the creek. It freed itself but was stranded again a short time later.
“It has already stranded itself twice,” said Christina Hansen, the animal rescue manager for the center. “That’s why we are feeling it is probably not in the best condition.”
Even though the dolphin was close to shore, rescuers were unable to retrieve it. Hansen said the dolphin’s size and the unsteady footing made a rescue attempt impossible.
The animal later freed itself and continued to swim in the creek through the afternoon.
Hansen had said the rescue center had informed the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and would continue to monitor the dolphin’s plight to see if a rescue would be possible, but the dolphin apparently died overnight.
The DEC and Southampton Town Marine Patrol officers were also at the scene.
