Sag Harbor Village Police Reports for the Week of December 4

SAG HARBOR VILLAGE — Sag Harbor Village Police arrested a Sag Harbor teenager on a charge of assault in the third degree, a misdemeanor, early Saturday morning. According to police, the victim, also a Sag Harbor teen, left work and was approaching his car parked on Rysam Street at about 10:30 Friday night when he noticed the interior light in a dark sedan go on, after which the suspect stepped out. The victim told police that the suspect had recently been photographing his car, then sending him threatening messages via social media. After getting out of the sedan, police said, the suspect approached the teen, shoved him and called him an obscenity after which the alleged victim shoved the suspect back. At that point, the suspect is said to have punched the teen in the forehead with full force, knocking him to the ground, and causing him to partially lose consciousness. The suspect then fled in the dark sedan with the victim reporting that he saw two other individuals in the car with the suspect. At that point, the victim got in his car and drove home, after which his father took him to the hospital to be treated for his injuries, which included an abrasion on his forehead. After being treated, he was released from the hospital and went to police headquarters to report the incident, the report states. Police were able to locate the reported assailant at about 5 a.m., arrested him and held him for arraignment later Saturday morning, at which time an order of protection, requiring the defendant to stay away from the victim and have no contact with him, especially through social media, was issued by the judge handling the arraignment, Carl Benincasa, after which the defendant was released with a future date on Sag Harbor Justice Court’s criminal calendar.

SAG HARBOR VILLAGE — A Sag Harbor resident came to police headquarters on Friday morning to report that he had been scammed by someone posing as a Chase bank employee over the phone. The scam started with the victim receiving a text message from an unknown number, according to police, that stated the message was from Chase Bank security and they were contacting him in order to assist him with his account, claiming it had been hacked. At that point, the victim was asked to transfer money from his account into an associated account of his in order to assist them with securing his account, the report reads. The victim deposited $29,800 on November 24, moving the money from his savings account directly into the Chase account that was given to him from the unknown number. Chase Bank’s global security team then reached out to the victim to advise him that they had spotted suspicious activity that seemed to be occurring on his account. It was at that point that the victim learned that it was not Chase asking for any monetary transfers or deposits from him, and that he appeared to have been involved in a bank scam, the report says. The victim contacted Chase Bank directly asking for a stop payment on the money transfer. The security team for Chase requested that the victim obtain a police report of the incident.

SAG HARBOR VILLAGE — Police received a report of a leaf blower being used on a Princeton Road property early Sunday afternoon, contrary to village code. An officer spoke with the resident using the leaf blower explaining the law, and the resident agreed to stop working for the day.

SAG HARBOR VILLAGE — Police received a complaint about a resident on Suffolk Street Extension, where dogs were barking in the yard. An officer visited the property with the barking dogs and spoke with the homeowner, who explained that she wasn’t feeling well and had been taking a nap and was not aware that the dogs were barking. The resident agreed to take the dogs in for the day, and no further action was taken.

SAG HARBOR VILLAGE — A Harrison Street resident called police Thanksgiving morning to report that her cat was stuck up a tree. An officer went to the scene and learned that, in the intervening time since the resident had contacted police, the cat had managed to make its way safely down to the ground. “No further action taken,” the report concludes.
